Your Instagram Page is Not Your Website
A lot of small business owners ask me whether they really need a website when they already have an active Instagram page. Their following is growing. People DM them regularly. Business is coming in through social. So what is the point of a website on top of all that?
It is a fair question. My answer is always the same: you need both, and for a reason most people do not think about until it is too late.
You Do Not Own Your Social Media Pages
This is the core issue. When you build your business on Instagram or Facebook, you are building on land you do not own. Meta owns it. They set the rules, they control the algorithm, and they can change both without warning.
We have seen accounts get suspended with no explanation. We have seen platforms update their algorithm and cut organic reach overnight. We have seen social platforms fall out of use entirely as their audience moved elsewhere. Businesses that built everything there had to start from scratch each time.
Your website is yours. Your domain, your content, your customer data, your brand presence. Nobody can suspend it, bury it in an algorithm update, or take it away from you. That alone is a strong reason to have one.
People Search Google, Not Instagram
When someone wants a product or service and they do not already know who to go to, they open Google and type it in. They do not search Instagram for it. That means if you have no website, you are completely invisible to that entire group of potential customers.
Think about how you personally find businesses you have not used before. You Google them. You look at their website. You check whether it looks credible. Most people do the same thing. A well-optimised website puts you in front of people at the exact moment they are looking. Social media cannot do that.
A Website Tells a More Complete Story
An Instagram page shows posts. A website shows everything. Your full list of services, pricing, a proper portfolio, client testimonials, your process, your background. All in one place, presented the way you want it presented.
When someone is deciding whether to contact you or someone else, they will look at your website to make that call. A business with a clean, professional site looks more established than one without. That perception affects purchasing decisions whether we like it or not.
The Two Work Better Together Than Either One Alone
Having a website does not mean using social media less. The two channels serve different purposes. Social media builds awareness, keeps an audience engaged, and drives traffic. The website converts that traffic into actual business: inquiries, bookings, purchases.
Every post on Instagram can link back to your site. Your site can feature your recent work. Your contact form captures leads that a DM in an inbox might lose or forget. Together they create a loop that works much better than either one on its own.
What a Working Business Website Needs
A site that looks outdated, loads slowly, or is hard to use on a phone can actually hurt rather than help. Here is what a website needs to do its job properly:
- A design that reflects your brand and looks current
- Fast loading on both desktop and mobile
- Clear information about what you do and how to reach you
- A contact form or booking option that is easy to find and use
- Basic SEO so Google can find and index your pages
- A layout that works well on phones, where most visitors will come from
What It Costs
One of the main reasons small businesses delay getting a website is the assumption that it is expensive. It does not have to be. A clean, professional site that does its job is within reach for most small businesses and startups. And in most cases, it pays for itself when the first customer finds you through Google and decides to work with you because your site looked credible.
